White / gray smoke coming from passenger side 292

Hey folks I have a mystery. I bought a f100 with a good running 292 about 3 months ago. I have been driving it. Running amazing. I recently noticed white smoke coming into my cab. it happens when I accelerate. It coming from around the passenger side head as well as the oil filler tube. Any ideas before I start pulling things apart. After I first got it a seafoamed it and all new gas. Didnt really smoke even with the seafoam. It only happens at higher rpm like 2500. What cha think?

First, if it had been sitting unused for a long time, try breaking it in like from new. Change oil and filter, and drive it easy for a day, never over 2200. Then, increase the RPM by 300 little by little. After a week of this, the rings may re-seat. The smoke is blow by. Buy a new filler cap, with a filter in it. Make sure the road draft tube is free of obstructions. If its a late model with a PCV, make sure all its parts are clean and free .

Cross your fingers and hope Ole Don is right. Could very well be condensation and the rings needing seating. Short trips in cold weather, before the PCV, I had a 312 do that. When I pulled the valve covers they were full of foam-water and oil condensed. I was having a heart attack when Dad came home, looked a it and said "go get on the freeway, and drive a 40 mile round trip". Got it all up to temp, when I got it home all the water was gone, engine was fine. But the advice to reseat the rings is still good.

Thanks a ton for the advise. I havnt got into the valve covers yet but will tomorrow. I was driving the truck for a while before it started to smoke. One thing I did was when i was changing the plugs a few weeks ago I moved the pvc glass bottle from its basket and flipped it upside down next to the carb while still attached to the hoses. Did I dump something into the passenger valve cover? Is there a way to clean or seafoam just the pcv system?

I don't know a lot about the trucks, but I've only seen road draft tubes, or open PCV systems on later OEM y blocks. I don't have a clue about what you've said.

The only glass bottles I remember under the hood were for windshield washers, but I do not know if trucks had them. they were on early to mid 50's fords, but then went to plastic bags. can you post a picture of what you are talking about?

I have a 64 f100 with a 292. There is no "glass bottle"? you speak of for the PCV.

Would you be speaking about the glass gas filter in the fueline?, In front of the carb.

Show us a picture. Also the PCV would not originally insert into the valve cover, but instead the valley cover. Just asking to clarify some things

On my 56 vicky, there is a heat riser valve on the right manifold. Mine got sticky and needed cleaning. Probably does not relate to your symptom, but worth checking.

Stick with Ole Don's advice - your are obviously burning oil within the engine somewhere. I vote leaking valve stem seals - they get hard and brittle over time. Anyhow, smoke coming up into the cab ain't a good thing.

Get a buddy with you under the hood with the truck in neutral and brake set. Get in the cab while he looks at the warm engine running and you punch the accelerator pedal a few times. Your buddy should see smoke from somewhere.

If that produces no smoke then it is a good bet that you only get smoke UNDER LOAD which would point to a compression issue - hence Ole Don's advice.

The only thing I will add is that the 3 months you had of things running good does not make sense if it is blowby from unseated rings. Maybe a ring is broken???? I would suggest to do a compression check on each cylinder at any rate.

Let us know what happens.

Seems to me that white smoke always meant water not oil burning. Blown head gasket or cracked head will show up as white smoke.
Just for what its worth.

I would pull the valve covers. Look for condensation, which still may be burning off if the truck has sat for a while.

Look at the oil drain-back holes at the ends of the heads, they should be clear. If it has sludge issues, that can retain moisture for a long time. The sludge will have a gray cast to it and is normal on an old engine.

Double check on the road draft tube and oil filler cap. The filler cap should be available anywhere.

Smoke on acceleration usually isn't valve stem seals. That goes with de-acceleration, which gives a high intake manifold vacuum and pulls the oil past the seals. It may smoke on initial start up as oil will run down the stems after it gets shut off.

Oil on acceleration goes with worn rings, and it is noticeably blue in color. So see what's under the valve covers and try an oil change if you haven't already. Milky oil (looks like Yoohoo) isn't good. You may see it in the coolant, but I don't think this is your case.

it appears that he don't need any advice from the folks here,,,,, just sayin.

It would be nice to hear how problems were resolved all of the time, but I guess that's asking for a lot.

Hey guys, so sorry about =not logging in for a while. I am finally able to get back to this project. I ordered new head gaskets and a aluminum intake from Mummert. I got one of the heads off this evening. is was really really stuck on there. I actually started with the drivers side. The smoke was coming from the from passenger side head. Looked to be right where the gasket is. I have some good caked on gunk on the front drivers side piston. i am going to have the heads milled slightly since i have them off. Any other recommendations while I have the heads off? I am trying to read up on what to do about the early top end oiling issues. It looks like there might be some mods I can do to improve this? I promise to daily post my progress. Here are some pics including the glass pCV system to the far side drivers wheel well. 292-forum - 1.jpg

Always use a high quality motor oil rated for diesel engines.

Poor oil flow & clogged oil passages in the heads.
