Which Side Mirror?

I need a drivers side mirror for my ‘30 Cabriolet. I see two styles, a clamp on style and a hinge style. The clamp on is far cheaper, but my door jamb gap is pretty small, not sure it will fit unless it is really thin. The hinge style says it is for closed cars with a 1.7” hinge. I measured and the Cabbie does have a 1.7” hinge. Any experience to share?

Any mirror that clamps onto the edge of the door will ruin the paint, I expect. I ALWAYS use the hinge mounted ones

I made my own mirror arms because I wanted to be able to see behind me on the passenger side, and I didn’t find anything in the marketplace that worked for both sides. I had them cast in red brass, but the company that cast them for me went out of business/retired. There was a lot of fitting work on each arm, but I was happy with the final product.

Thank you for the replies. Russ, you should have made a bunch of those and sold them. They look great!

I have the hinge mirrors on both sides of both of my sedans and love them (I had to mod one to fit the right side of the 31 slant). Not sure off the top of my head how the cabriolet door would differ from a sedan door. The vendors sell hinges labelled as right/left for the 30/31. Those have offset arms. The straight arm version for the 28/29 (Vintique number A-17741-A) works fine for the 30 sedans, and will work for the '31 slant if you drill out for a larger hinge pin and use the extra long slant hinge pin available from Snyders.

Those have been Out of Stock for a while now.

These are the mirror arms I use, got them from Snyder's about 10 years ago. Have since upgraded them to 6" convex mirrors on both sides.

I believe in functionality over aesthetics. On one of my cars, the external mirrors came from a motor cycle. I made adaptors to mount them to the windscreen post (Phaeton). On another, a Ute made to look like a barn find, I made them out of steel rod I had laying around.
If aesthetics are important, it's not difficult to make something that will do the job well and once electro plated, will look good too.

I had mirrors on both fender mounted spares . I mounted convex small stick-on mirrors on the face of the 5" mirrors. Nobody noticed as I could see to the rear.

JayJay, my bad. Since you gave a Snyder's part # (A-17741-A), I didn't think to look on Bratton's (#24200).
See attached. Snyders uses the Vintique number (A-17741-A), Mikes uses the same number without the dashes (A17741A), Bratton's uses a different number (24200), and Bert's uses yet a third number (A17714). All appear to be the same mirror.

I also have a mirror on the right fender spare. I found when I put the seat back that I could not see the mirror, so I fabricated a longer stalk for it. Then I put a 4" fisheye lens (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HMJVZX1?tag=atomicindus08-20) on it. It still jiggled enough that I added the hinge mirror. Now I have the flat mirror on the hinge and the fisheye on the spare, good visibility to the right side.
