Which Pertronix unit for a '57-up Y block distributor?

I have a '60 ford 292 Y-block and pertronix told me a 1281 is the unit I wanted. should fit all V-8's . Give them a call and they should help you with any questions.

I agree on 1281 for the later distributor. 1282 seems to be for the 54-56 load o matic.

Make sure you get the Ignitor II version, and the recomended Pertronix coil to go w/it.
I've used the Ignitor I for yrs even with a junkyard coil. Pertronix will tell you how to pick a coil that will work, if not using theirs. thing with Ignitor I is you can't leave the key in the "on" position as the module can burn up if the dist. is in a certain spot. I installed a plug in the wires going to the dist so I could work with the key on because our '41 w/ 302 had no acc. position on the ignition switch

Yes, I too had a Ignitor I for yrs. in my '57 Fairlane with no problems. Then I had the ignition switch "on" for a bit while wiring up a new radio.
And, well, you know the rest of that story! Good idea installing a plug on yours to disconnect the distributor. Yes, you don't have to use one of their coils, as long as you use one w/the right ohms specified for your application. - F F
BTW - I remember seeing your '60 when it was for sale 20 yrs. ago in Brockport NY!

we saw a pic of our car in a buffalo paper sitting in a field in Sweden,ny in a snow storm(2016). I think it was an article called "old cars in western ny" or something like that. It then went to cortland,ny, then to spencer,ny briefly and then we bought it in 2018. northery ny winters didn't do it any good! someone put some good $$ in the interior. a few rust holes on fenders but floors were like new after we cleaned decades of dirt, tar and oil off. 292 runs like a top. repainted sunburst copper w/ white top

Looks nice! Glad to see that rare old Ford getting the care & love it deserves. I was not in a position to buy it yrs. ago, & hoped it would eventually go to a good home.
Looks like it did! - F F

The Summit site is confusing as to which Pertronix unit fits the '57-up Y block distributor. Anybody know which # I need to buy?
'57 & up = 1281

Make sure the Y-block distributor is the one you think it is.
Lots of parts swaps can happen in 60+ years.

photo 1, '54 to '56 Loadomatic (Pertronix # 1282, but they're made "negative ground")
photo 2, '57 to early '59
photo 3, '59+

The two versions of '57 and newer Y-block distributor should take the same Pertronix module.

dmsfrr, that is super information...and pictures...of the distributors that you might encounter on the late Ford V8's. Particularly helpful to those of us who are just now coming along to these great engines!!

Thanks for posting!!
