Straight SAE 90 is not as easy to source as it used to be. SAE 85W/90 and 85W/140 are easier to source all in GL-5. These are all common gear lubes in this day and age. Some gear lubricants are blended for better characteristics for limited slip clutches but the average gear set can use about anything made for hypoids on the shelf at the local auto parts supply. If your axle seals are in good condition, the synthetic will stay inside better. It finds its way out easier than straight mineral grades and it is more expensive.
