This is supposed to be an original wood piece for my '29 RPU. A new wood kit did not have anything like it. Where does it go?

No, it's too short and not shaped for that, I also have those. It's 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 16 1/2"
Is it possible it was between the cab and bed? Did early models have something like that?

There was a post a couple of weeks ago about this same thing I think, you should do a search about pick ups!
 
I have accounted for all the pieces in the first diagram above in ratamahata's post. This is the last unaccounted for piece. I'm beginning to think it may have been added by an owner. It sure looks like a factory piece though.
