Where did my clutch go?

My 28 roadster clutch was fine, but releasing immediately off the floor and had several inches of slack in the pedal when depressing to release so I went to adjust it.

I removed the pin and unscrewed the fork to get around 1/4" more length in the rod. When I put it back together it is like there is almost no spring return and the resistance on the clutch itself is almost non existent . The pedal barely has enough spring to return to the top by itself.

I haven't attempted to try the clutch itself yet to see if it disengages, I thought I would post here first in case I did something wrong. I can't see how, I mean this is the most simple adjustment possible?

The spring that returns the Throwout Bearing is the same spring that returns the Clutch Pedal back to the top. Check inside the Bell Housing Inspwction Plate and see if the Spring has been strreetchhed. Bet it has. It is about a $2.00 part and can be done without pulling the engine.

You should make the rod shorter. Longer will make the clutch worse. This is why the pedal won't come back to the top. When the adjustment is correct you may have to pry the lever up so the pin will go into the clevis.

I have never done clutch work before so I guess I learned something today.

I had adjusted it the wrong way and backed off the throwout bearing from the clutch so it wasn't even engaging. The Throwout bearing spring appears OK.

thanks, simple issue, simple fix!

thank you

Hi,

This is Martin in Ohio. Could a FB'r post a pic or diagram of the clutch throwout spring mentioned in the above posts?? The last time I had the inspection plate off in my e28, don't remember seeing this part.

Since I have some clutch problems, possibly this could be one of the causes.

Thanks and Regards,

I pulled off the floor in the passenger compartment and there is a small sheet metal access cover on the top of the ******/bell housing held on with 2 large screws, once removed the spring is right there attached to the throw out bearing assembly. Press the clutch , and watch it move.

Here is a link to a lubrication chart with the "clutch release bearing" shown

If you are new to Model A's it is a good idea to buy a copy of the Service Bulletins and Les Andrews's book. For about $50 you get $1000 worth of information

Maybe this will help.

You will need to use a vice grip on the arm that comes out of the housing to take that free play out....(against the spring pressure) then you will feel where the forks actually touch the fingers of the pressure plate. You will want slight clearance at that point....so it does not run the throw out bearing all the time...it will wear out quickly if the throw out clearance is too tight.

MM In post #6,the 28 multi-disc clutch didnt use the small T O brg return spring.the clutch pack has a large internal spring for the T O brg.

Thanks, ColombiA, that what I thought, no TO return spring on the multi-disc clutch.
Oh well, I had to take the floor boards out anyway!! haha.
Another question would be, how much clearance on the MD clutch between the throwout bearing and the spring collar/bearing surface??
Thanks and Regards, mmindling@aol.com
