I have a high serial number 47 mercury convertible I am restoring. I only have one piece of glass that looks original (vent window). I want to buy the correct glass with correct bugs, but am wondering if it is possible for my 47 to have a January 48 date code on the windows (my vent window has the "A" on the left of the ford script and "DH" on the right. I believe that is January of 1948.. Any help. I can find lots of data on 47 production start (April of 47) but when did they end?

The '48 model year cars were generally in the show rooms some time in Sept. of '47. So I doubt that it is original but replaced at some time later.
Doubt that production was 'started' in '47, more likely in '46

I can't speak with certainty on Fords and Mercurys, but I am more familiar with the Lincolns. Since all three makes were made by the Ford Motor Co.,I am sure that there is carry over to the other makes. Basically, The 1946 models were to be made for 1946 only. There were labor strikes and materials shortages and the factories could not keep up with demand. The 1947 models came out looking exactly like the 1946 models and it was planned to bring out the new (1949) models that year. The 1947 models (At least for Lincoln ) were given a seriel number that started with 7. By March - April of 1947 it was obvious that the new models were not going to make it for 1947, so the late 1947 models were updated with new mouldings, parking lights, dash instrument background and other minor things. When the 1948 models were introduced in Sept. 1947, they were almost exactly the same as the late 1947 models, because the NEW models were going to come out. Finally, what we know as 1949 models came out in March?April of 1948. People have been trying to figure out what year Ford product they have ever since.

Thanks!.. After I found the serial number I also discovered they were crossing 47 and 48 engines so some serial #s are out of order. I think I'll just pick a 47 month like June for my window scripts and replace the one that has the script now. No wonder the guy that I bought the car from thought it was a 48! Serial #s match and they are 799A so I know it is a 47. I really like this ford barn as I was able to find all my heard to find parts thanks to members like all of you. Merry Christmas!

Might be better off picking a month like Feb. or Mar. As I understand it the new '48 production runs started sometime in April or May of '47.

The info I have states the very short 1948 Ford model year production began on November 1, 1947 and ended in March of '48.
