When did Ford change to 12 volt systems (Newbie)

I did try to search this before asking. Anyway when did Henry or Edsel make the change to 12 volt electrical systems and did they also change to Neg. ground at the same time ? Also were generators only for 6 volt. Thanks for your answers.
 
12V negative ground - 1956. Generators were both 6 V and 12V, the 12 volt generators were on some Fords thru the mid 60s - I think about '65 was when most were alternators, some like TBirds etc. were earlier.

When? Technically probably sometime in 1955 for the 1956 model year.:)
