Wheel Spokes

As I venture into the restoration of my 21" wheels, I notice 2 of the 5 have a small space between the short spokes where they cross. On the other three wheels, the short spokes touch at that point, and even bend slightly around each other. Are the three wheels damaged to that point, or is that a normal variation commonly found that is normal?

I think there is a paintable space between the short crossed spokes, but not sure. I'll have to look when I get home tonight. I do recommend that you spin each wheel before you put much effort into it. Reject any wheel that has run out or hop of more than an 1/8" or so. If you don't and you get a wobbly wheel mounted on the back, the fellow traveler behind you will let you know that your wheels are crooked.
The bad wheels make fairly interesting yard art.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed> But the 15 wheels I looked at. Looked real close maybe touching. lots of rust and old paint.

this is what I did with a wheel not worth saving. It's hard to read in the picture but it says Model A Parking

Wheel Spokes & Straightening the wheels

I have a "Do it Yourself" procedure for straightening spokes and wheels on my website. Look for it on the "Services" page.
Most wheels I have straightened have little consistancy to the space between the spokes. I created a little space between mine when refinishing to allow some room for paint and powder coating. I did not want to develop rust after a few years.

Thanks Dave, I intend to use your method, as soon as I can locate a used drum to make my fixture.
