Wheel spindle repair

I have a front wheel spindle that the wheel bearings are spinning around on. They were shimmed up with what looks like a credit card! I'm having a machine shop build it back up and turn it down to fit new bearings.
My question is, has anyone ever done this? After thinking about it, I'm concerned that it could change the temper in the steel. Will it be safe and ok or should I look for a nos or new replacement assembly. Thanks!

From what i have seen, the spindle is not case hardened. I would not worry about the viability of that kind of repair. Expense wise, finding a good used spindle is probably more cost effective. You see so many with center punch pock marks to expand the bearing mount surface, that makes me feel they are actually pretty soft.

It's a pretty common practice to knurl the spindle if it's been worn down by a spinning race. The knurling process raises the metal and will give you a tighter fit for the race. Your machine shop can do that pretty easily I would think.

Good luck
