A guy near me has a set of 1932 wheels that are 17 x 4.5. they are five lug wheels. Will these wheels fit on a 1930 model a coupe. Also can I then run radial tires with no tubes? Any input would be greatly appreciated
All of Ford spoked wheels of 1932 thru 1935 (18", 17" & 16") will fit the Model A:
18" are 1932;
17" are 1933 & 1934;
16" are 1935.
The photo shows my Coupe with 1932 18" wheels.
Although 19-inch Model A wheels are designated as tube type, I have a friend who runs them as tubeless. The 17-inch wheels could probably also be run tubeless. It depends on how smooth the insides are, not pitted. Plus, some lube on the beads would help seal the tires. Give it a try and if they work then they work.
I think you need to check and verify the wheel dimensions as to them being as stated. True 1933-34 17" wheels have a correctly measured width of 3-1/4". The later and wider 1935 wheels should correctly measure only 4". Some aftermarket wheels such as Kelsey Hayes did measure 4-1/2". Confirm that the 5 bolt pattern diameter is 5-1/2" the same as the Model A's. Post some pictures? Best to get everything figured out before thinking about tires.
I’ve decided to keeep the original A wheels and get them painted the correct color and put bias ply tires on them. Trying to watch the pocketbook and keep everything period correct
