Wheel shimmy

would front wheel shimmy, after going over a bump or hole in road, be caused by the radium ball having the rubber and not as the original set up ? from what ive been told its better to order the parts and go back to original so its has some flex there at the ball , thanks john

Remove the rubber ball setup... they've acquired a bad reputation over the years for rotting out over time. Revert back to the original setup and add a washer to remove the excessive clearance caused by wear. This washer can be purchased from most Model A suppliers.

I have the aftermarket rubber ball set up now, and I'm going to be changing back to the regional style . The question I have is if my ball is worn I have the washer, does it go on the top of the ball ? To give me the wright degree on my axel

The rubber ball is great for not letting the wishbone ball wear and she will steer fine-harder than the stock setup but will still steer. I reverted back to original as an experiment and I think she steers better.

As for the wheel shimmy, the steering knuckles are worn so they must be replaced. Mine did that after I hit something in the road but once replaced never done it again.

yes on top of the ball.. thats why the washer has a hole in it for oil to pass

Most likely the wishbone ball. Check the wheel nut on both wheels because a loose nut may need to be tightened, go ahead a put some grease in the bearings. I had a problem with shimmy front at stop sign and crossing RR track in 31 Phaeton it turned out to be loose wheel bearings on both fronts. Have fun modelAtony tony white Lafayette, LA

A front wheel shimmy can be caused by anything loose in the front end. It can be anything from right wheel bearing to left wheel bearing and anything in between including the radius arm ball, drag link, pitman arm, steering box.

Right on! Just fix anything that has slack in it & the shimmey's GONE! Don't "overthink" it:confused:

What is the computer says I have toe fungus?:D

I was just going to mention toe in also, but you beat me to it. In fact that's the first thing I'd check.
