Whatzit? Early '40 Ford Ash Tray.

Can someone tell me if this is an ash tray from an early 1940 Ford car (I found an internet reference that indicated Ford changed ash tray types early in the '40 production run)? If so, is it complete (other than the missing knob) or is it missing a cover plate? It came in a box of donated goodies mostly filled with 40 Ford Deluxe car dash stuff -- had 2 other original ash trays that looked like the style of the reproduction items I've seen available from Bob Drake. I don't have a 40 Ford car and I'm not very familiar with the dash. Just wondering what it is. Thanks. -Ken

Just one on each corner as best I can remember. Those possibly could be for the back seat area.
 
The first ash tray is the 40 early style but there are two versions of this ash tray on some the divider on the top of the ash tray is in a different direction. There are springs on the side of the cover and a bracket that attachés everything to the dash, so yours is not complete.
The pair is the later style 40 ash trays. On both the early and later styles there are only two ash trays in the dash, one on each far side.
