Re: coil polarity
Like Bruce stated , coil needs to match battery polarity.

Another issue is that once a coil has been ran in a particular0 polarity there is a build up of resisdual magnetism that stays in that coil making it not good to use with another polarity....

Tom, what do you think of this? I guess the coil would be alright because it would
have been wired correctly from the factory.

The SOFT iron core will easily reverse any residual magnetism, just like polarizing a generator, so just switch it back to the correct polarity.:)

Here's a couple more pictures I took yesterday showing the coil wired correctly. Since I wanted my coil draw to show through the ammeter I switched the black wire from the passenger side terminal to the driver's side terminal. The black wire was barely long enough to reach.

I'm showing 2 updated pictures to show how the color shown on the computor can change, even with the same camera and computor. I took the second and third pictures a few seconds apart. The only change was I set the camera on close for one picture, and distant for the other picture.

The metal conduit is original and should be on all 28's and 29's until Ford changed to the cloth cover, and I'd have to look in the J/S for that change. All the black paint has left mine, so I'll have to repaint it and the clip, as well as remove a small dent from the conduit. The conduit bracket is original, and keeps the metal tube from slipping too far in and touching the stud.

The nuts for the gas tank have never been removed and are correct on the BOTTOM side of the lip.

A comment was made about the colors on the coii. All the slant pole coils I've seen have this brown tower. Notice that the black metal case fits around the primary studs, therefore the first thing on the stud MUST be an insulating washer. My friend almost tossed his coil as being shorted, until I showed him the insulating washer was missing.

The ignition cable is a repro and is about 2" too long. so it bends to the side a bit.

I used WD-40 and gas to clean the firewall, then wiped it with an oil soaked rag. The heater hole was made by drilling a series of small holes in a circle. I'll have a job to patch that someday when I restore the car. It looks like a job for FLOP.:)

I thought P.S. had won it when he suggested that the wire was rubbing on the firewall. It sure looked like an intermittent short.

Thanks for posting, Tom!

The wires aren't rubbing the firewall lip, so no problem there.:)

I didn't understand quickchange's reply, but if he ment "wired backwards" then he had the first correct answer.:D

To those that said the gas tank to firewall bolts direction are wrong are definitely incorrect. I have dismantled several original firewall/gas tank and ALL had the heads on top. In fact all the fine point 28/29's at several MARC meets have the heads on the top.

Ha ha ha, 2 pages on that picture! If I posted a picture of inside the hood on my car the server would melt down.

Years ago when my brother in law and I were both into toy trains (yeah Pluck, post WWII Lionel's) and we took our wives to Cal Stewart we would laugh about the 'geek ratio' of different hobbies and how toy trains had a particularly high quotient.

Model A folk are right up there for sure :D:D
