what's wrong with a standard fuel pump?

First post here. I’ve just started restoring a ’34 Fordor and like the idea of using an auxiliary electric pumps to prime the system.

I’m curious what type of electric pump people recommend and how it’s typically installed with the original mechanical pump. Any tips or setups that work well would be greatly appreciated.

I been out of this for a while or I'd be able to give you the number. Find an Airtex Fuel Pump catalog online and look for an electric fuel pump with only a couple pounds of pressure, a regular one with 6 lbs. is too much pressure for a flathead. The carb will overflow. The electric fuel pump must be an open type when it's off. Most electric fuel pumps are closed in the off position. You do not want a closed pump; it must be open in the off position when not in use so that your mechanical pump can draw fuel through it. If I remember correctly, there is only a couple of them with 2 lbs of pressure and are open in the off position. I had a stroke, or I'd be able to give you the fuel pump number. Some of that info of mine got eraised.

You recall quite well. And, your advice is spot on.

I agree. I always enjoy reading your posts Flathead Fever.

I run a low pressure 6v Airtex, but I believe they stopped making them. There is a non-name brand knockoff available online, but I have no idea about its quality.

I installed a new fuel pump, with bowl, and a flow through electric pump from 3rd Gen. It works great. The car had an electric pump on it (unknown pressure) when I bought the car in 2021. I couldn’t figure out why the car would stall going down the road, I think it was flooding out. Now it’s fine.

For 12 years I ran an Airtex E8902 (proubably the same one you had). Since the company was bought and they are not made anymore, when it finally gave out and I replaced it with:

So far so good. I don't have a regulator in the system.
