Whats under your visor?

In the midst of a roof replacement on a 30 coupe. When you look under the visor you would see the sheet metal cover & the top front surface of the wood header (about 1" wood exposed along the entire lengh beneath the visor,

What has been done in this area? It has been suggested to run a piece of fender welt as a gasket?

Any guidance is appreciated as I will tackle this area over the next several weeks,

Personally i let the extra top material come down far enough to cover this part.Works for me.Just be sure you have enough do do this.My friend didnt have that much so he just left it as it was. RAY

First off, I would be leary of bringing the material over the edge, but that is just me. It sounds like the top of the header needs to be shaved down somewhat. Be sure and install the windshield, the rubber, and the filler trim to test fit it. Make sure you have clearance between the frame swinging out over top of the gas cap. You may need to re-work the bottom of the header wood too.

Also, there is a piece of welting that gets applied under the sheetmetal header panel. And, if the header wood has been sealed prior to the visor being installed, and during the finishcoat of paint this area is painted too providing protection. Even during driving in a blinding rainstorm, I doubt enough water would penetrate to create an issue, and the paint & sealer will keep the wood preserved at least as long as the top material will last.

I must be missing something.Does the top material on a coupe go UNDER the visor?I thought the top overlapped the edge of the visor.Do you nail the visor down on top of the top?I have an untouched original Tudor and the visor lip is under the top .It also has what looks to be a cloth covered welt at the seam of the visor and header cover.

My coupe has it's original header, and the windshield fits good.

I have seen other coupes that have a repro header that makes the metal fit lower with a gap where the hinge screws on ---the windshield can hit the gas cap when swung out, there is too much wood in the front, it needs routed out so the metal fits tight, if you push the metal up and move it some it will make marks where it rubs --cut that wood away some, try again , you probably should have the gas tank in,and trial fit the windshield before you totally set the nails.

It looks like on mine there is a small amount of wood showing above the welting ---and it looks like I have to tap in a nail, and I missed some paint on the mirror (in 1970 when I painted it) --

The top material does not go under the visor. Brent has explained it well. There should not be an inch of wood showing. The gap should be just wide enough to accept the "head" of the welting. I use the smaller gas tank welt.

Also, I have found a number of windshields that hit the gas cap when opened. It has been my experience that either the bottom curve of the windshield glass is not cut correctly or the bottom section of the frame is not pressed deep enough onto the bottom of the windshield glass. Gar Williams

Gentlemen,

Hope your xmas was enjoyable,

Kurt, thanks for taking the time to display picutres as that is the exact detail I needed to see. It appears the welt gasket is intended to act as a seal and fill any gap between metal and visor.

Looks like that will be my approuch,
