when tighting fan belt on singel belt engines, i have a heck of a time. big screw drivers, pry bars, and a lot of nicks, bent wire looms an busted knuckles. there must be a better tool. reguards dick t.
I didn't invent that tool. I don't even have one- -yet. Another Barner, and I'm sorry I did not take note of who, made the tool and posted the photo. Pretty cool though isn't it?
Don't know how it works on a single belt engine but I tighten the generator/pump belt on my 59A first by inserting my cresent wrench handle under the generator right against the front bracket so the end is on the intake manifold bracket under the front of the generator (see photo) then push down the end of the wrench to "pry" the generator up as tight as I want the belt and hold it there while tightening the bolt that holds it in place. It takes very little effort with that much leverage. No special jig or tool required. Just simple leverage. That belt is the more critical for tightness since it runs both water pumps and the generator. The fan belt I tighten by just pulling up on the fan while tightening one of the bolts that holds it in place. Again, doesn't take much effort to just lift the fan up. It's not heavy like the generator is. Then I can quit pulling up on the fan and tighten the other bolt. I don't think the tightness of that belt is as critical as the other that I get tighter by "prying" the generator up.
Hey Debear......that sure beats the heck out of the piece of oak I carved to wedge in there and pry up with a plastic coated wrench ! That's sweet for sure !
While on the road, you need to make do with as few special tools as you can carry. I carry a short 2x4 block which comes in handy for several different jobs, in this case to apply leverage under a tire iron prying the generator up. This requires only one hand, the other remains free to tighten the gbenerator mounting nut.
