What's the best rust remover ?

Hi
I've got a boxful of parts that have surface rust. Without getting into the really dangerous stuff, what's a good rust remover to use? I don't have a big shop or great facilities, but I'm good with a plastic bucket, rubber gloves and steel wool. Thanks for your suggestions.

I have used Evapo-rust to remove rust. It works pretty well. Phosphoric acid also works well. Both products are not very dangerous, but care needs to be taken for all chemicals.

Evaporust

Molasses

acid

media blasting

wire brushing

different items different methods, some methods can cause other problems later if not used correct ---acid if not neutralized will cause more rust, and if used near other things can cause them to rust (used in closed garage, everything in garage rusts from fumes), glass beads can get inside and cause problems if not removed, wire brushing can damage threads and change details on some things---and remove skin (so can acid) --how much "sueface rust", and what size items do you need to clean?

Electrolysis a nice passive method, but not easy to get connection on many small items

Wire brush , sand paper , what ever you used to scuff the surface of the parts and then [PPG DX579 CHEMFIL] Metal cleaner..Then after that wipe off with paint thinner it Neutralize the metal prep.....use rubber gloves and follow directions on the bottle..bucket,steel wool and gloves will do.

I will second ppg DX579 I use it all the time a long with a scratch pad and good gloves it does a real nice job on surface rust, evaporust does a pretty good job on parts that you can soak in it, but I do not like the looks of the finish when done it will turn the metal dark DX579 will not

A body shop guy on the H.A.M.B. uses white vinegar to remove surface rust prior to priming and painting (does not believe that phosphoric acid [metal prep] does a better job). Also heard of it being used to de-rust engine block water jackets. Have not tried it myself - just passing on what others have used.

After some use it will become darker, just wash the part off with HOT water and dawn and it will come out clean

I recently used EvapoRust on my Otwell Heater manifold and after an overnight soak, I rinsed off the part and I was down to the cast iron finish. Does a great job and can be reused until it no longer is effective.

Last week I used white vinegar and a small stainless steel brush on some body panels that had some surface rust. After that I cleaned the part with laquer thinner before priming. It worked for me.

If you want a chemical, go to Home Depot and buy some phosphoric acid. It is sold as a concrete cleaner. I use the hell out of it.
