Whats in the trunk?

Been detailing the trunk of my '56 Crown Vic and thought I'd better get a new mat as the one that came with the car seems to be missing the right hand section.

However, looking at images in the various parts suppliers' catalogs it appears the factory mat never went behind the spare wheel.

It looks weird to me to have the white painted metal showing behind the wheel and so I want to cover it up with maybe black rubber / carpet.

Am I missing something and has any barner come up with a decent solution?

Lastly, can anybody please post some photos of where the jack and wheel brace should be located..mine just hang behind the spare wheel at present.

In anticipation...
Colin

There are several knowledgeable Crown Vic folks lurking around here that can help you out.

In any case, here's a link to an organization you may or may not know about....

The mat is correct-

You would not want a mat under the spare as it might trap condensation and begin rusting.

You might want a cover-

There is supposed to be a "Z" bracket in the space behind the spare tire well but closer to the car tailpan where the end of the bumper-jack is inserted into. Prior to inserting the jack in the "Z" bracket, the jack base is to be inserted into the "Z" bracket. (There is a slotted hole in the base for this purpose). The jack lays parallel to and behind the spare tire. The front of the jack rail lays on the floor and also rests upon an extruded rubber moulding glued to the rear passenger wheelwell.
Originally, the spare tire was inserted into the well after the jack and base was in place. Swing the spare tire hold-down stud out through the large hole in the very middle of the spare tire wheel and push the spare tire toward the passenger side so it rests against the jack. insert the funny shaped bracket through the hold-down stud and hold the bracket against the wheel at the middle. Put on the wingnut and tighten it down on the bracket.
It might help to get a repro of the factory jack instructions which has a self-stick backing and should be stuck on the rear passenger wheelwell facing toward the rear so it can be easily read. That decal is available at many Ford resto parts suppliers. It gives a fairly good illustration.

Mines original and it looks just like what you have Colin plus I have the jacking instructions still on the right side of the tire well. I tried downloading photos off my "smart" phone but either it's too stupid or my old Crapbook is.
I hate technology which is why I like my old car so much.
