What's in my oil pan?

I drained my oil and this is what I found. (Circled in red, the penny and match are for scale)

What is it, and should I be worried?

Not magnetic
Does not burn but glows red, did not char.
Will sand and appears to be fibrous.
Chocolate in color.
Carburetor cleaner has no effect on it.

my guess ..... if its soft it could be a piece of the cork rear seal ..... if its hard , i go with buz on timing gear teeth ..................... steve

I could have posted a similar picture last year. I would bet a lot of money that they are timing gear teeth. Pull the side timing gear cover off and have a look. It's not a bad process to put a new gear on - except the pain of removing the radiator. I went with an aluminum gear.
