Can anyone tell me when Ford started putting alternators in cars/trucks and which vehicles they were in?

Thanks

1963 is the first yr ford offered an altenator as standard equip, i maybe wrong on this one but i think it was 65 for the f100,350, all low out put 42 to 60 amps

'65 for the Mustang. 64 1/2 Mustangs still used the generator, 63 F100 had generator and I think the 64 Custom we had also had a gen.

Ford offered an alternator for the 57 Ford, an option I'm sure. The service manual and electrical assembly manual have a break down. I'll try to scan the page and post it.

On the 289 motors, if it had a generator, it had a five bolt bell housing. If it had an alternator, it had the modern six bolt bell pattern we are familiar with. I put on the fans for a few years, the alternator job was two jobs before mine. The early alternators were 37, 42, 55 amp, then the larger size housing was 70, 95, or 105. We used mostly Ford alternators, the very early were from Leece Naville (sp?)
with some Motorola. Right before I retired in '98, the standard alternator was 100 or 105 amp for a Ranger.

If 63 was the first year as standard equipment, how come I had to rewire my 64 Galaxie to remove the voltage regulator and wiring to put an alternator on it?

in my neck of the woods they showed up late in 64 on big fords.mustangsand smaller in 66.these were canadian models so it may have been different on u s models.

I have had several "late model Fords" starting with a '58 Ford F100.. I've had several '64-65 Fords, cars and trucks.. All of the trucks through '64 had generators, all of the '65 and later cars/trucks have had alternators..
The one exception is a '59 F-100 4 x 4 that I have had for about twenty years... The truck is very unusual, it came from Havre Mt. The truck is a Custom Cab, big window and has every option listed in Fords '59 catalog, including the safety package, dual heaters, limit slip Dana 44's. The truck also has a Leece-Neville alternator, which resembles the Mopar style of alternator.. I believe the alternator option was intended for vehicles that were intended for two way radio applications.
When I had the L-N alternator rebuilt, the shop told me that the alternator put out enough voltage to "weld with"... It had a big rectifier incorporated into the charging system.

I have a '63 Tbird with an alternator and a '64 Galaxie 500 with a 289 and a generator

The important thing to rememebr is, there are no hard fast rules. Lincoln got the good stuff first, then it trickled down. Two different assembly plants building the same product could have built them very differently, with different parts.
