What would you do?

My insurance asks for the 'primary' drivers to be listed, but anybody can drive the car and I will be covered.I can loan my car to anybody,I just can't rent it out.I show people the ropes, check them a little to see if they are capable of mastering it,then turn my back on them.People do much better if nobody is riding herd on them.

Speak to the young man involved. Discuss not only the clutch but double clutching, the proper use of the spark advance, when it should be up, down, part way etc., proper use of the GAV and choke. What to do if it dies in traffic. In otherwords scare the pants off of him. Then suggest that you would be willing to chaffeur him and I love the part of that being your wedding gift. Truly a work of art.

Brum1 is right about keeping the Wife happy. If she does not care, Check your and the kids insurance, give him a tutorial in a parking lot. He may even give up on it if he cant drive with a clutch or non- synchro gears. As for liability, you are in much better shape if you can testify that you checked him out and thought him competent.

My Dad always said "Don't loan out your chainsaw or your wife. If they are returned, they're guaranteed to be broken." I have to add my Model A to this list.

Nobody drives my A except me, and hopefully, some day soon my wife. I am trying to get her to learn how to drive my baby. This has nothing whatsoever to do with insurance etc., but has everything to do with the fact that I did the work on this vehicle, it is my pride and joy and, quite frankly, I don't trust other people with it. It has been my experience that other people just don't treat your property with the same respect as their own.

You got that right!
Years ago I was selling my big McCulloch chainsaw and only asking $35 for it. A neighbor said "let me try it out" and took it for 8 hours to cut all the trees he wanted to cut up, then returned it with a broken recoil. Didn't even say "thanks". Just said "no, I'm not interested".

They want to drive it to the wedding themselves? Ask them: "Do you want to get in an accident or breakdown on the way to your wedding?"

Plenty of time for those sorts of things after they are married!

Doug

The in laws, who are on the cheap side, thier daughter is getting married, and they request to use your A in the wedding party. They don't want you to drive the newly weds- they want thier new son-in-law and daughter to drive it to arrive to the Church which is about 20 miles from thier house to the church and IT'S IN NJ- not the burbs either, but an area south of Newark area.

Grant it they are in-laws, BUT, they are the type of in-laws who borrow everything from everyone without allowing you to borrow something of thiers - They are the type who never hold a family event at thier house They expect everyone else to hold holiday events, and when they do come (Chistmas/Thanksgiving/Easter) they bring a store bought dish which costs them less than $10.00 then they drink all your beer-wine and take home a bunch of left overs. (Can you feel my hostility, yet?)

Besides my feelings towards them- What would you do?

What events do you allow your A to participate in - parades-homecomeing and who other than yourself do you allow to drive your A?

Wow, isn't the Ford Barn Wonderful Wuudie, just post a ((What would you do Question)), and wala, an easy answer. Now you won't have to worry about your insurance deductible, cigarette burn holes in the upholstery or a gutted car, any scratches in the paint from trees, bushes, or shrubs, jewelry or small dents, and scratches from gassing the tank, or running it over. Now you won't have to worry about some kid finding out what the old Buggy can do , or how much rubber it can leave, or if it can scratch second. I am Kind of sure, you would never have to worry about the wedding couple, and or party with any Adult Beverages. There is a longer list, but the main source of my typing, which are my two index fingers, are tired. So, any way, as Brent is so emphatic, about lending his Cars to, any one, his words, call up your Out Laws, and give them Brent's web, and phone number, an tell them, the nice man Brent, has solved there problem. Herm.

Wuudie ......................
If you are going to the wedding, anyway, just tell them,"Sure, but I am driving". Then stick with it.
MIKE :)

didn't that whole symbolic vision go out long ago ? tell 'em forget it .
wait'n for a part so to get it runnin again.

Sounds to me you have already made up your mind. We all have to many $'s and time for some one to possibly misuse, or damage something or Wreck it. All they will probably say is " I'm Sorry" and be on their way.

I'd say No unless You drive it.
For those who say Let them, have more Money than You and I. You will Regret it if Something happens to your Pride and Joy, accomplished by $'s, Sweat, Greasy Hands , Clothing. Hours and Hours of Your Labor, Etc.

Confucius Say -- " So Sorry Charlie" to your Relatives

The funniest thing would be if the in-laws read this post.

Problem solved.

Will be no need to beat around the bush as to how you feel about them,

This is said a little different here in OZ.

Never loan your chainsaw or your girlfriend, they will both always come back the same way........F$%#&D.

Letting the son-in-law drive sounds like a recipe for disaster! He's going to be a bundle of nerves anyway, and now he's in an unfamiliar car drivng into a crowd of people waving and yelling, and kids running up to the car while it's still moving, etc., etc.

Most people with any sense wouldn't make such a request in my opinion. Decent people don't walk up and say, "Hey that looks expensive. Let me borrow it."

So my answer would be, "No" .... and judging by your post, Wuudie, I think you feel the same way.

BUT .. here's another option that would probably work fine and keep the peace:

Only allow them to drive the car within sight from the church ... a block or two should be enough, whatever it takes.

The in-laws just mainly want to make the scene in front of the crowd. Once the couple drives out of sight the crowd will not know the difference.

Your car will be at much less risk and there shouldn't be a problem with this option unless the in-laws are complete idiots.

I have to add my no to the mix. If they are as you say, can you imagine what your happen if the car developed a problem and they were late to the event?

Well, I thought hard about getting in on this but I will anyway. I don't think the issue here is about the value of the car or whether Wuudie thinks the new son in law can drive the A or any kind of damage that might be incurred. The issue here is he just don't like his in-laws and has a hard time regaling himself to loan them ANYTHING and I see his point. Being the tightwads he seems to portray them as I would just use the broken excuse or an insurance line to get out of it. This would keep him from having to "just say no" and should get him out of the issue.

In an issue like this plays on the owners good graces even though it is not fair to even ask. If you don't like them just make an excuse till the wedding is over. It's your car and you have the right to say no or yes for whatever reason.

It has a cracked head, a rotted muffler and the tires are bald flat, yeah they can use it if they buy a new Brumfield head, an Aries stainless steel muffler and Cokers!

You have EVERY right to say no. IF you loaned it to him and he had car troubles or didn't like to downshift around corners he could/would return your car damaged and there could be hard feelings for a long time. When has anyone ever loaned something out and it came back in better condition than when originally loaned? Weve all loaned out items ( like Tom W.) and when returned they denied that they did anything wrong. Sorry Brent, you can easily fix anything, but NO,NO,NO.
