What would kill a new coil?

Toasty I would refer your questions to Bubba. He knows more about ignitions systems then I will ever know.

I run stock ignitions in my cars.

The readings maybe be good, but will that change when the coil is warm? I don't know.

to make a quick answer to your problem, to much voltage to it, if your running an altenator wind the engine up around 1000 rpm and check how much voltage going there, if the problem persists install a 4 1/2 volt voltage drop, the engine will run fine at those volts

Check polarity of the coil. I understand the wrong polarity will cause overheating of coil and leaking over time. Usually you will not notice a difference in engine performance while the coil is slowly going bad.

Polarity is correct, the + side is tied to ground. And voltage is 7.2VDC which is easily within tolerance. There are three additional diodes on the supply side to filter out any AC component.

I am (for now) going with the idea that the coil couldn't get proper cooling in the inverted mounting. I have the present coil mounted upright - which I don't like - and will see how it goes. For now it is running great, but it was running great on the last one before it died.
