Overdrive version? RUG CD, RUG CL, or D7DR are some of the identifiers for the toploader overdrive transmissions.

Here’s a discussion about these over on the HAMB. The one I had was a real low first (like 3.27 or so) and a .8 o/d. Can’t remember which one it was.

The 3-4 shift lever on the transmission get mounted up instead of down to make a 4 speed floor shift work. Confusing, right? Do some poking around, it might or might not not be something you want to use. It is a syncro first gear.

Be interesting to know any tag or casting numbers on that. It is a 3 speed with over drive, but what I see in the pictures says to me it has an early top loader tail housing on it. My experience with the od trans is the rear output bearing is larger, so that tail hosing had to be opened up a bit. That tail housing has Mustang shifter bolts drilled but also has Falcon bolt bosses not drilled. Hard to find that tail housing when you need one.
I used to use those overdrive trans in early Bronco's because it has the 3.27 first and the od 4th.

The first Ford top loaders were T86 types in the 50s. Some had R10 electric overdrives but a lot of them were just 3-speeds. The later top loader 4-speed design was based on the T86.
