What % to spend on your hobby

When people ask me what my Model A is worth, I tell them a pack of cirgarettes a day for five years. My budget is based on perspective.

My 92 year old Dad keeps telling me to: spend, spend, spend. (on my A, that is) He says that he was such a tightwad all his life that he didn't really enjoy a hobby like this when he was young enough to appreciate it.

My wife is all for it! Gives her an excuse to spend on her hobby -- Quilting, and she enjoys doing things with the Model A group as well.

A survival tip, since hobbies are generally obsessive, is to spend CASH and keep the credit card locked up. Debit card or paypal for mail order with money coming right out of your bank account so you feel the flow...
If you find yourself wasting too much money fron competitive bidding and the occasional piece of misleadingly portrayed junk on EBAY, getoutta there. Put every dollar you would have bid on something, stuff it into a backpack, and make the trek to Hershey a part of your life...buy things you can see from people you can talk to.

Formula:

1. Pay all your bills (no debt)
2. Tithe to your church
3. Save 10%
4. Be sure your wife has money (she probably has it all)

The rest, plus anything you might make on the side or from gains or sales in the hobby go back in.

If you can't do the above, find another hobby! No kidding. But who makes money at golf or tennis other than Tiger? It is a hobby or maybe a disease, or both!

I have fun Trading parts, for parts that I need.
Wick

Hey, Wick,
Tradin' & wheelin" & dealin' is great fun!!:D Also, givin' something away is great fun too, it just BLOWS them away.:D I gave Ted an old "BUFFALO" forge and he acted like I had given him a driveable Model A Ford. He smiled for 3 months!:D:D:D Bill W.

You need a woman who is gullible enough to believe that turning all your assets into endlessly growing piles of scrap iron is somehow better and healthier as a hobby than heroin, online gambling, or zoning out in front of the television.
She also should be well employed and have close relatives who own plating and machine shops. Be careful...there are women out there who do not fit this profile!
:)

Everyone has their own budget constraints, but I like to guess how much longer I might have to live (age 66) & then compare that to how long I probably be dead!!

After reading all of these posts, JtownJoe still says it all. I am 50 and the alive time vrs. the dead time percentage looks pretty good to me. I think it is time for a second Model A.

Bill, Bill here, (sounds like an echo, echo, echo)
Ask your wife, for me, where do ladies hide their "mad money?"
While sufering dementia at home,Pat complained pathetically about being "broke." I, very unselfishly,:D emtpied my wallet of $72.00 and put it in her warm hand.:D
She's been in a fine care home for 2 1/2 years, and I still haven't found her "STASH PLACE!" Bill W.

Ive never had a problem spending money on the "A". I just say that the needed part(S) will allow us to continue driving the scenic back roads of our GREAT country!! we have already driven it around the World (1982). Memories are great and you never tire of the US Highways aqnd Byways......
