What Primer?

I am beginning a full rebuild of two '55 T-Birds. The first is a snowshoe bird that had a really cruddy paint job back in the late '70s. I have pulled the engine/transmission and am going to start on the front suspension as soon as I get parts. My question has to do with a primer to use in the engine bay after I get it sanded down and cleaned up. Unfortunately, this will have to be rattle can, but I am looking for something that can be used as a base for the time that I get the whole car sprayed. What is the good word??

I will probably be using either Eastwoods rust product or POR-15 on the suspension parts that need painting...

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Kent

I like the epoxy rattle can primer. Its expensive, and stinks. I spray small parts quick and leave. If I had to stick around, I would wear a mask. Less expensive and it seems to last nearly forever is red oxide rattle can primer over bare metal washed with acetone.

i'm with don the epoxy is the best and is waterproof make sure you cover the glass when your spraying if you have an autobody supply in town ck with them if not eastwood has a good selection do not use a rustolem type primer as it is not compatible with modern paints and mat wrinkle when sprayed over

Frank 'n Ole,

Thanks for the come-back! I am kind of out in the sticks of eastern South Dakota and Eastwood has become a good source for lots of stuff in other projects. I will try that epoxy primer, with a mask...

also you do not have to prime the whole thing only spot prime the bare metal also a scotch brite pad works well for sanding the bay as it is flexible

Frank,

Yes, I have been using Scotchbrite on some other projects! I have let the T-Birds molder in storage for way too many years! It is good to be dealing with Detroit iron again.

Happy New Year,
