What I Learned on FB this Year

As I approach the 1-year anniversary as a Model "A" owner, I want to say "THANKS" to Ford Barn and all the knowledgeable members who take time to share information.

During this past year I have driven "Henrietta" about 2,000 miles, participated in 3 parades, 2 car shows and at least one "Show-And-Tell". There's no MAFCA chapter in my community, and very few Model "A" owners, so I rely on Ford Barn as much as I do the reference books I've collected.

This year, with guidance from FB members, I rebuilt my distributor and Zenith Carb. I've learned how to time the car so she's purrin' like a kitty; maintain the cooling system and winterize; what, when and how to lube; why I need shocks and how to install original-style links; how to pronounce "Houdaille"; how to test a coil and capacitor; how to un-stick a starter because I screwed up and advanced the spark when starting; and a systematic procedure for trouble-shooting. Oh, yeah, and "TAP-TAP-TAP". I also learned I'm supposed to get a free package of "Depends" upon my 100th post.... still waiting by the mailbox for that.

Henrietta has become sort of a local fave in my community, and brings smiles and waves as we "potata-potata-potata" and "AHOOOOgah" thru town.

Thanks to all... you've become part of her story and have made my world a little bigger. I'm looking forward to learning more in 2014!

Best wishes for a great New Year!

A very HAPPY NEW YEAR to you 29er and a BIG THANK YOU to all the loyal Fordbarn members for their input, knowledge and opinions.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone and be careful out there in those "A"s throughout this winter season and all throughout the year!

29er & al"s28/33 , I have to say "Ditto" on that , about the big "THANKS" to everyone here who have also helped me the last year . I have had my "30" just over a year , I cant believe what a great bunch of helpful and knowledgeable guys there are here to help . Also , Happy New Year to ALL .

I agree! For us that live in areas where there is no other knowledgeable Model A owners, Ford Barn is WONDERFUL!! Thanks for all the good advice I have received over the years.

Coming up on year as a new Model A owner and I, too, echo the gratitude for the FB members. There is a wealth of information and tips available from some very helpful people. Thanks for all the help!

I'll throw in my $0.02 and add another big "THANK YOU" to all the helpful denizens of this place. Just a tad over two years ago, I was a complete newbie who decided to splurge on a 1930 Town Sedan, and going through a mental checklist, here are a few things I learned to deal with, mainly due to this place:

- stuck starter
- no spark due to a loose point block
- no spark due to a short in the distributor
- how to get to TDC for setting the timing when you can't handcrank the engine
- water in the oil wasn't a blown headgasket, but a sign of neglecting to retorque the headnuts
- bounce the car up and down a bit and clogged zerks sometimes can suddenly take grease
- a voltage regulator on the generator is a wonderful thing, and sure beats driving around with the headlights on half the time to avoid overcharging the battery

I'm sure there's more, but that's what immediately comes to mind...

I've been a member for several years, and been restoring, driving, and showing my Model As since the early 70s. The Barn always answers my questions promptly and I always post when I know the answer to someone's question. I check out The Barn every morning with coffee and every evening with wine or a cocktail. It's my favorite website.

It is great to reflect on the benefit the internet and FordBarn has given the Model A hobby. We can be friends and helpful to people around the world. I have had the opportunity to actually visit people I have met here and other internet sites. The Model A hobby is a great group of people and I hope we can keep it growing for many more years. I have owned a Model A since the early 60s, taking my first "Summer Tour" in 1966 driving from California to Albuquerque, NM to the MAFCA national convention. Getting out and driving the cars and meeting people in our travels makes this the greatest hobby in the world. My mantra has become "It's the Journey...Not the Destination!" I hope to see many of you on my next Summer Tour to Puyallup, WA for the next convention! Or at the Model A Ford museum in September for the Model A Extravaganza! If you see me come up and say hello I love talking Model A to people just ask my wife!

A lot "Depends" on timing. My thanks to the many post of interest on Fordbarn and to a number of local CKMARC for help in getting my 29 on the road again. T & A people are a special group.

A special HAPPY NEW YEAR TO all and to those who are quickly adding years a HAPPY NEW DAY.

Mitch: Hehe. It's a Di-lemma: on one hand I'd say XXL to maximize the absorption effect, but on the other hand, the bigger the size, the more they'd bind up when I get 'em in a BUNCH! (by the way, does anybody know where I can get one of those clear distributor caps?)

I drilled holes over the contacts on an old cap and it showed me what I wanted, just couldn't run it on the road very far for fear of dirt or water killing the Eng. Had to observe the contacts at an angle but they were visible.
