Can anyone identify this Engine? I have turned this photo upside down, so that the Casting Number is able to be read. It reads C6ME-A, however, i am not sure if the second digit is a 6 or an 8. This Casting is on the right hand side. Would appreciate help in identifying this Big Block Ford V8 Engine. Thanks.

Here is what I found online. Hope it helps and hope it's accurate.

I once had a block like that. It was supposed to be a 428 Mercury engine. It definitely was a 428 because I measured it, but don't know if it came out of a Mercury.

Here is a picture of the top of this engine. Also a photo of the Automatic Transmission that is also a mystery? It has a one piece Aluminium Case. What is the Transmission?

Darrell, Unfortunately, we don't know the Bore, as the Engine has been previously rebuilt and we are not intending to disturb it by removing a Head.

I'm not sure if you can get a straight enough shot to check the stroke through a spark plug hole or not. If you can..., a 428 has a 3.98" stroke, 390's and 427's have a 3.78" stroke and 352's have a 3.5" stroke.

Awesome that you got the factory cast iron headers in the deal too ! Very valuable and perform good.

i forgot the easy way to tell what engine you have duh.if its a 410 or 428 it will have a balance weight welded to the flywheel which you can see through the inspection plate hole.if not a 390.its not a 427 or you would see the bolts for the cross bolt mains as all later ones had them

I have the same casting number on a 1966 390 GT block out of a Fairlane. The trans is a C6. Whatever the block is, the 63-64 427 ex manifolds are worth a lot more!

I'm no expert but the C6 would indicate it was first cast in 66. Does it have both sets of motor mount holes? The 64 and earlier didn't because they weren't putting them in pickups yet. Everything I've ever heard is that all FE blocks except the 427 are indistinguishable from the outside. But I also have some faint memory that the early 332 and 352 blocks had some small visual difference.
The dowel test through a spark plug hole previously mentioned will tell you the stroke and narrow it down a lot.

Yes, I agree the earlier 332 and 352 blocks were a little different. Something to do with bosses for accessories to mount to. Think it was just in the 1950's, but not sure of the years. Anyway, nothing to do with the C6ME-A block of course.
