What does a good 9 inch rear cost?

here in no. calif $165, with drum or disk, have seen them on craigs list for $100,get the 32 splined axle one if you can, a lot stronger and usually have the big axle bearings

For the F-1 you can use the 58-72 pickup 9 inch. It should bolt right in, but you will have to change the shock brackets. You can also use the 9 inch out of an older T-Bird, but you will have to weld on new axle pads.

Look around there are a couple companies out there selling complete ready to run units drum to drum . Look at the cost and what it takes to make a complete unit out of a used unit. Axle bearings , third member etc....adds up prety quick.

AND dont ever buy one without all the brakes and drums, you can never find all that stuff and it varies from year to year...

Stay away from the Versailles rear. They are overpriced and parts are made of "unobtanium". They have highway gear ratios and you need too get ALL the brake and E-brake parts to make them function properly. Bubba is "right on."

If you stick with a pickup rear axle, most should have 5 1/2 bolt circle rims like your truck. Cars would probably be 4 1/2"

What is the benefit of changing over to a 9" ? Is it just to gain better gear ratio?
I didn't think the flathead is too powerful for it's original rear.

The 9 inch allows you to easily change gear ratios. The factory rear in F-1 is usually 3.92 which is not exactly a highway gear. They are also tough to change the ratio as they are the Spicer type and gears are not that easy to find. With the 9 inch you can get the pickup housing and axles with the 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. You can then use almost any 3rd member ( pass car, pickup) for the gear ratio you need.
In regards to brakes I did find that the F-1 brakes will fit the later pickup 9 inch rear end.

I know this is an old post, but I am really interested in swapping out the stock rear end in my 49 F1 V-8 with one having a higher ratio, maybe in the 3.2:1 range. Anyone know what later model trucks I should be looking for to get a bolt on rear end?

Easy fit is the 57 to mid 60's F100 rear but the majority of those years had a 3.70 ratio.
They are 28 spline .
For the cost find a complete rear and then buy a new ring and pinion. They are easy to set up.

I got one in my 40 ford pickup with a 3.25 ratio a T5 transmission and a worn out 53 ford motor and it still fun to drive and the motor is not screaming.

The 41 pickup when I put it back together will have the same rear and transmission but with a 292 ford motor

i found out that some ( not many) came with 3:73 rears in them & after checking around i found out that mine has a 3 :73 in it so i am going to leave the stock rear in it,i do have a
nice 327 positraction rear with disc brakes that came out of a lincoln that i am keeping
for now i also have a 1984 jag ifs & irs if anyone is intrested in it

They range anywhere between free and $350. I think in 67 ford started using the wider drums so you'd pick up an extra half inch of brakes

If I get the 57-60 pickup box I will be atleast be trying to see what they bring, so a good timely question for me as I was planning on asking the same question from the sellers side. Rod

There's no free lunch (usually). I paid $75 for a 3.50 ratio out of a '71, which I thought was a bargain. It cost $250 to put the diff gears right, and I ended up having to redo the brakes on it for another $100. It also turned out to be from a 4x4, so the perches were at the wrong angles. I doubt there are any out there that are in cherry condition, I'd figure on at least new wheel bearings, a new pinion seal and probably a new yoke, as I have yet to see one that isn't scored too badly. The side gears take a real beating too...
