What constitutes as a carb rebuild?

Hey fellas,

So I purchased some ford script 94’s and that were supposed to be “rebuilt.” When I went to install them I found out the threads were stripped and the fuel I lets were epoxied in so I purchased some new carb tops and cleaned them up. Back to my question, how can I tell If the carbs were rebuilt without taking the whole thing apart? The tops are off right now.

Thanks,
George

Hi; Only a few 'rebuilders' drill out the passage plugs and properly clean the carbs. Always look for new 'plugs' in the blind passages on the outside. Ask questions about the components and their E 10 ect rated components. Newc

I purchased two Stromberg 97's at a swap meet that had the rebuild stickers on them. Once home I took them apart. The emulsion tubes were never pulled, one accelerator tube (candy cane) was clogged, the shafts were sloppy. I paid a fair price for rebuildable cores so it didn't matter, but they were far from rebuilt.

Send them to someone reliable. It will save you money and aggravation in the long run

I keep having visions of a guy "rebuilding" carburetors by installing a couple of gaskets, and then spray-painting the carb with a silver spray-bomb...."Earl Sheib re-build" is what I call those. As a couple of folks have mentioned above, there is a lot more to an actual re-build than 99% of guys even have a clue. Send your 94s to Charlie NY, and your 97s to Uncle Max. They WILL come back "RE-BUILT", and tested, to boot! Probably the two most-experienced and ethical guys on the planet that have ever massaged a fuel mixing device. DD
