What came original?

I will definitely be purchasing the judging books. Just seeing what I can find out here before it goes off to platers. I'm not going to enter this car into any contests... I own it for my own enjoyment!

to tell if your car is canadian
you should contact carl becker and the canadian model A club
he will have all the correct answers
your bumper clamps are orignal canadian ones used fron June 28 to Aug 1930
and they are chrome ,not nickle
the center round one should read Ford made in canada
your engine number should start with a *CA
you should have robertson screws
your shocks should say CAS and made in Canada
your radiator emblem should look almost black instead of the bright blue
or you can have a car thats a mixture

Rad. Emblem appears to be black, as well as round center clamp. I do not believe center clamp says made in Canada though... Will have to check shocks.

Welcome to the Barn
Nice looking Phaeton you have there !!
As your off to the platers ; The only Brightwork on your car that was originally
Chrome plated were the Bumpers and clamps
All other Brightwork was Bright Nickle or Brushed Nickle .

IMO it makes a big difference to the apearance of the car and restoration .
You might as well have it done right as plating is not cheap these days.
The Judgeing standards will explain what finishes are on which parts.
Best to buy the book before you have the plating done.

Also, my insurance vin reads va55443, starting to think it's supposed to read ca55443...

Ok, If that is the correct US.# it would be for a late march 1928 engine, not sure about it being a Canada built one.. In either case it being that early it also would have NO outside door handles.. Don't waste you $$ on the rack, that car never had one.. From the factory they never came with two tail lights.. The car as it sits shows it to be a late 1928 early 1929.. Also the hood & the right front fender appear to be of the later type 1928-29.. It also never had a stone guard on the radiator..

I had someone go and verify that the engine number is in fact ca55443, as well as the title vin. Looks like insurance messed up!
Looks like I have a model eh!
I like the stone guard, and my goose on my radiator!
I will leave wind deflectors, but take off my mirrors and store them.
I will remove luggage rack, as its in bad shape.
To verify, the drivers side tail light is correct? If so, I will remove passenger as long as no holes were drilled to install.
Door handles will stay on.

Bob, you say October, everything else is telling me March 21, 1928. What leads you to believe it's october? If this is the case, wind deflectors and door handles could be correct....

What rear bumper clamps did a Canadian model have?
I did contact Carl Becker and Canadian model a association as well!
I am very excited about this, as it just adds a little more history to the cars story. I know how the car came to California, but am wondering how it came to the U.S.?

Hi, They started later in the year in Canada & were a lot slower in production than the US.. As far as the handles go, as I stated in either case were not used.. Yes on drivers side tail light only..

If anyone could provide input on what the correct bumper clamps are for the rear Canadian bumper, and any other parts it should have, I would appreciate it. Also, do the judging books show correct Canadian, or only us parts?

Also,

The car has a plate under the seat saying it was assembled in Australia... I have done some research, and have found that Australian cars would have Canadian build numbers. Does anyone know about the Australians? Should I create another post for this?

My nickle, after thirty-five years, is now looking tired.
Nickle plating is correct plating for your bumpers. However, chrome is much more durable and the stainless steel better yet. If you are NOT going to 'show' your car to picky MAFCA/MARC judging, I would recommend Chrome plating on every thing.

All Bumpers & Clamps were Chrome plated in 28/29, with the 1930/31 having S/S clamps & the 28/28 having a Nickel plated Ford center clamp..

Fred - according to the latest edition of the Restoration Guidelines (page 15-1) you are correct. This section was last revised in 1997. When I restored my '28 Phaeton, using the then current Judging Standards (1978-1980) the Standards stated that the bumpers were to be Nickle. Polished on the front, and left dull on the edges and back. That is what I did. In 1982 a set of 'Revisions' came out that changed that to Chrome.

This just goes to show that the Judging Standards are constantly changing, and the changes, revisions & up-dates need to be reviewed constantly by the restorer, if he is to 'keep up' with the ever-changing guidelines.

From all the original cars I have seen during the 1950-s to 1970's, I still believe that Nickle was used for the bumpers on at least SOME of the '28 cars. However, as I prefer chrome (as a more durable and less maintenance plating), I certainly have no trouble following the Restoration Guidelines. And Chrome is now recognized as the 'Law of the Land' for bumpers of all years of Model A production; so I now amend my comment about Nickle bumpers on my post #34.

Is the engine original to this car, or a replacement? Canadian cars used a type of body/trim fastener similar to a phillips head. I had an early '28 Some say AR, with all the early features and it was Canadian. The upholstery was black.

Canadian built cars had two different screw fasteners. As most of the cars were partially assembled in the US and shipped to Canadian assembly plants across Canada for final assembly any screws were of the slotted type. Any screws that were part of the Canadian assembly were Robertson screws (square socket) not the Philips screws (cross + these were strictly American). Many other parts are similar to US BUT do not strictly follow the standards quoted.

I reckon you have a late 28 car .

If it is Canadian origin, and Australian built, it will be all wood in the subframe and seat risers and you will have a coach bolt head showing at the bottom of the cowl pillar, not a rivet head,

Also, if your roof irons are sitting on a rest when it is down, the rests are accessories too.

From factory, there were just rubber plugs in holes supplied.

If you look very carefully, you will most likely find a stamped date on the firewall on the left hand side , although if it is Australian and re-imported back, the LHD tank was probably changed in.

Isthere any evidence of a right hand drive notch out for the RHD steering column passed thru lower firewall , in case they only swapped tank and not whole cowl structure.?
