What am I missing about vacuum?

If you are going to run an air box like Jack's I think it's well worth the experimenting. My set up is sort of street roddy and I have no real rules to conform to like the hot rod and the stockers. I think a 2 or 2 1/2" air intake tube into an air cleaner box would feed a flathead plenty of air. On the way in to the air box you could tie in the low pressure high volume crank case vent. You may even be able to put the pcv device hidden in the air box. You may even be able to modify a steel air cleaner from an early inline 6, 70's smog motor for this. You could make a new carb adapter, close the air intake at the end, modify the heat tube that warms the air mixture from the exhaust and run the air intake tube into it. You could route the pcv from the manifold top as Jack has his in a piece of 1" soft copper tubing, form it, polish it and give it a shot of clear. You could either use flare nuts or short rubber couplings to connect it. It could be made to look real sweet.

With this box upon the carb set up you almost beg to take things further with airflow modifications on the engine.>>>If Jack took his air intake for his air box and pulled it from in front of his radiator and did this while his engine was running, he would have a big grin on his face, I did.>>>

I agree Frank. Likely could be made more efficient. A lot of the modern engine compartments seem to pull cool air into their engine air-filter boxes thru large diameter plastic tubes running to intakes near the front bumper.

So to see if I can put a big grin on my face before the year ends, I think I'll run up to Home Depot before it closes for tonight's celebrations and buy one of those nice flexible shiny metallized 4" diameter clothes drier vent tubing. That should be big enough diameter to feed a 97 or four, don't you think. 8^)

I'm Feeding a 408 cube with a big cam and a 800 Edelbrock on a piece of 3" flexible aluminum dryer tube. I think a piece of 3 is plenty, 4" for sure. Ram air Flat heads, cool.

A bit or maybe 2 bits off-topic.

But all this ram-induction talk somehow reminded me of a neat photo I once found on google. It showed a home-made crossram setup on a flathead. I didn't save the image. Now I can't seem to find it. Probably not using the right combination of keywords.

As I recall, several fairly straight tubes were bolted at angles directly to the block's intake ports. Each tube fed by a 97 or a 94 at the other end hanging over the opposite-side head. I don't recall if there were 4 or 8 tubes. But it sure looked cool on a flathead even it was *only 4 dueces*. Essentially a closed plenum. Probably a bear to synchronize. Terrible gas mileage. Maybe not work too good most of the time. But. like I said, it sure looked cool to see a flathead with that many deuces..

Does anyone here ever recall seeing this picture or have a copy of it you could post? It'd sure be a hoot to see it again. Might give folks more R&D ideas to test out. 8^)

Thanks and Happy New Year again.

"36,
Flatjack cover my flanks.....I've run an 8ba dressed as a 59a for
mucho years with only the oil fill as a breather....no problems at all.
I'm installing a new 8ba stroker in the truck now and again will use the
oil fill cap as my breather, only difference is this motor looks like an 8ba
and the breather/oil fill is the tube type on the front LH side of the intake.
Regardless ,don't hide it if you run one...if it gets sludged up you'll
wish you had easy access to change it out.

Hi Charlie, I'm sure you won't have any problems with your setup. Just make sure you keep the breather clean. I let mine get a little dirty once and knew I had a problem when I noticed a little oil on the floor. Cleaned the breather and no more drip. Goes to show you that it is venteing the system. By the way, I'm stuck out in Vegas now. Went to the Rose Bowl and then our flight back got cancelled due to a scheduling conflict (I think the crew celebtrated New Years too long). Bummer that the Badgers lost, but the Packers won today, so that helps. By the way, we were hoping to get home as I had Packer's tickets too. Oh well. Jack

From vacuum to PCV's to breathers and you, #9, took this thread to a football game with a disparaging remark about the airline crew, WOW! That sets a new high water mark for thread creep. Sorry, as a retired airline pilot, I get rankled fast with comments about the crew like yours. Let me add some more thread creep, did you happen to take notice of the weather patterns lately that had a huge effect on air travel over the holidays? Do you think that recent legislation that fines the airlines if passengers get caught sitting on the tarmac for too long might have contributed to quicker cancellations and rescheduling of flights? Ryan, I'm sure you will censor this but please at least send a copy of it to #9 so that he knows why.
