This horn button is for a 1955 Ford Mainline or base Ranch Wagon. I have two of them. One is mint. The center circle is supposed to be painted an argent/silver color. Mainlines and Base (Mainline) Ranch Wagons had unique steering wheels and used only this horn button and no horn ring like Customlines and Fairlanes.

Thanks for the info. The original paint in the center had been removed several years ago. When I got it, it had some sort of epoxy primer or gas tank sealant spilled on it and it took 6 days of soaking in Acetone to dissolve it. Anyway it is good to know what it fits. I was hoping when I dug it out that it might have been usable to convert my 37 Banjo wheel to a just a palin button without light switch for the AV8 project. Dia is alittle to small, so will have to look at other possibilities. Thanks Rod

Re: Whar Year is This Horn Button???--and how is it removed??

sorry to hijack this older thread but can anyone tell me how to remove this horn ring on a 54?

and is the wire from the horn ring supposed to short to ground or does it complete the circuit to somewhere??

my 54 has been converted to 12V but i can't seem to get the horns to work. i've purchased a 12v relay and non-stock horn to use instead but can't get them to work.

thanks!!

To remove the horn button you need to push it all the way in (collapse the spring) then rotate it counter clockwise to remove it.

The horn wire that runs up the steering hollow shaft carries current and completes the ground when you press the horn button. This sends voltage to the horn relay on the firewall, and from there to the horns. Maybe you don't have battery power to the horn wire ?

Push down on the button and rotate the button and ring counterclockwise. The button grounds the horn relay. Your horn wire may be broken.

the wire should come out the bottom of steering box if original it will run up inner fender a little hard to unplug as they used bullet connectors it will be in a little black sleeve it plugs into the harness that runs to headlights. it will be dark blue with a black tracer athough after all these years the colour is likely gone.as Dobie said it is a ground not power. the horn relay will be marked by 3 letters H=horn B=battery(power) S signal this is the wire from steering at bottom of steering box.once you have the horn ring off you will see a black button with a rounded head. if you pull on this it will pull out and the wire is attached to it.if the wire is broken if near where it comes out of box it will be hard to repair as stated it runs through the steering shaft.it has to be removed from shaft by pulling on the little button But before you just pull it out if you can try to tie a piece of thin string to box end to make it easier to pull new one back through shaft the hole is small so do not make knot to big or it will jam in tube. there is lots of play for wire so not hard to pull new one .Macs has them listed in electrical if you need a new one.let us know what you find Barry PS the wire will be good for 12 volts as 6 volt use a heavier gauge wire than 12 volt

got it!! thanks everyone!! came off easily. there was a lot of corrosion so i cleaned everything up nice and tidy using 600 grit and steel wool. i found the center wire-followed it down to the old relay. i replaced the relay with the current design and added a small air horn (don't remember the name-maybe HOBO??). there was a 12v strip on the firewall so i took my power from there (i fused it of course). works like a dream. again my thanks for the tips!!
