My experince was a very close one...
After restoring my 1929 Standard Coupe (with new, rebuilt steering arms and pitman arm), I took off for California from Walla Walla, WA. Made it with out a problem.
On my return and just coming into the town of Bend, Oregon, it happened. All of a sudden I had no steering. Thank God I was going slow into the the southern end of town and down a little hill. Here I was in the middle of an intersection and no steering. So I pushed it into the gas station.
Upon inspection I found that the ball on the pitman arm had come apart.
I then pulled out my 1980 MAFCA Directory, made a few calls o some of the members in the area, found a used pitman arm, put it on, and I was on my way.
When I got home I removed ALL three rebuilt arms and replaced them with good solid originals. Called the fellow who restored them and told him about the misshap. He quit the service as I did not see his add in The Restorer any more.
Since then, the technology has somewhat changed and I now have rebuilt ones from A and L.
I completey agree with Dennis as this is one restoration of parts I will leave up to the professionels who have had experience on the restoration of these units.
However the BEST ones are those original ones that have good balls and never been touched.
