I purchased a set of trunk rack extenders for my town sedan so it would reach past the spare. They were 1/4" steel and after a few weeks started to sag and bend. And by bend I mean torqued out and bent bad. I noticed most of the vendors seemed to sell the same type weak looking extenders.
So, a buddy of mine had some 1/2 steel laying around and we made a set of extenders. We made two modifications, first we made it fit snug between the bumper spacing. The other brackets you buy do not fill up the space that well. Secondly, using 1/2" steel, they do not need to have the curve in them. They can be straight and the luggage rack will fit nicely. So, we gave it the added bonus of strength by no curve and another 1/4" of steel. These seem pretty stout and since I mainly use my trunk for tools, jack, fluids, etc...it needed to be able to support the added weight.
