water pumps question

I bought two pumps from NPD . They were Bob Drake pumps. They came quick and I fitted one one my engine on engine stand. . I have a '53 V-8 I am putting in a '48 F-1 .. At the top where the two mounting hole are ,there is another hole I am assuming to be a water jacket. When I set pump in place that hole is exposed??????????? I sent pump back as wrong ones but they said I must have a different engine . I was confused (not hard to do) .. I called Bob Drake & talked with them 20 minutes and from what they were telling the hole I call a water jacket is an oil hole and with the new design it is not needed?????????? Now I am even more cofused

The 8BA series flatheads run the waterbypass, the earlier blocks do not. Sounds like you've got an earlier block [pre 48] and the pumps are for the later engines. Does your engine block have the bell housing cast on the back? If so, that would identify it as early and you'd need the 37-48 style water pumps. Brian

You,ve got the early/48 pumps. i believe you need the 49-51 Mercury pumps to fit the late block in the 48 pickup.

What am I missing here ?? Tailgater says he has a 48 F1. My recollection is that 48 F1 is the first use of the 8ba engine. He's putting in a 53 8ba engine. Why not 48 TRUCK pumps ??? I'm confused.... (not difficult, for me)

BillM and bobH have your info. The problem comes with the 48 F1 - if you're talking to car guys they automatically think of the 59AB block but the trucks got the 8BA in 48 - whoever you talked to at Bob Drake is missing this point.

You don't want Merc pumps - the foot is too high for the pickups without the 2" adapter to raise them back up to frame level.

You could always simplify it for Drake and ask for 49 or 50 truck pumps : )

A picture or two would really help. :)

Pictures most definitely. An EAB motor should fit right in an 8RT installation with no problems. The 53 motor will have no oil holes for pumps and 8RT truck pumps for 48 to 52 should fit any 8BA/EAB type block with no issues. The 48/49 pumps might have had an oiler but it would have been the type with the spring loaded top. 49 cars had bushing type pumps too but no one makes them new that I am aware of. The sealed bearing pumps last a lot longer and were always considered a normal replacement for the bushing types.
