:oFellers, I replaced the fan blade on our 28 Phaeton last summer, with the water pump off, this is where I screwed up:confused: in replacing the water pump, I used #1 permatex to replace the pump, now it's contrary, can't get it off, wanting to replace the cyl. head gasket. Any idea's, sure don't want to break anything....I have all the studs out of the head that holds the pump in place, in doing this we can remove the pump and not move the raditor...

I just took the head off my Model A using an early VW jack under the front lip of the head. I've also seen it done by jacking up on the waterpump but I was afraid I might break the pump casting. I also had removed the head nuts and soaked the studs with Kroil fo a couple of days before I started.

He use the #1 on the water pump not the head. Does not sound like he has tried taking the head off yet. I would disconnected the stay rods, take off the shell (makes it a lot easier to get to mounting bolts) and hoses, loosen the radiator mounting bolts and at least lean it forward. If the engine runs you might loosen the head nuts some like maybe an 1/16 to 1/8 inch up and start the car, this will or should bump the head up if it hasn't been off in a while. Drain the radiator first.

With the water outlet removed you should be able to pry forward on the water pump impellor. Or, as mentioned, just leave it fastened to the head.

If the radiator is still in the car I would put a piece of heavy cardbord or thin plywood between it and the fan as a precaution. Then tap on the pump sides with a rubber mallet to break the seal.

I had never removed the head, you are so right, drained rad., I backed off 1/8" on head nuts, using kroil to soak studs, then crank engine, hope the head comes loose. The Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook by Les Andrews comes in pretty handy, A welth of information, and you guys do too. I have a head gasket leak....
