Water Pump Woes

Thanks JR, I just had a
Hank Williams epiphany - I saw the light! I'm already an old man and I am very stubborn but - It will be Grade 8 for me! This truck is for my seven year old Grandson and I would hope the grade eights will hold up for him.

Thanks for all of you information.

Regards,
Randy

Now I,m wondering what is torque number for the water pumps? I really don,t want to think about twisting off a bolt. I plan to use stainless steel bolts. Thanks, Randy

congratulations you must have a sense of satisfaction. I bought a set of those Irwins for the same job a couple of years back its a bloody brilliant tool to have your arsenal. I had a rusted bolt in there that had lost its hex with corrosion. It came out easy.

Stain less bolt with some anti seize permatex went in with the new pumps.

I got all of the grade eight bolts in the water pumps and fully expect them to give many years of service. I ran into another puzzler. When I was installing new front motor mounts, I noticed a difference in size between the old and new mounts. The bolt thru the old motor mount was a 1/2" bolt. The new bolt was a 7/16". Needless to say, I reused the old metal bolts and the new rubbers. Anyway, I lost one of the old castle nuts and had to stop and will get a new bolt and will finish tomorrow. My garage is a very good thief. Anything I lay down, suddenly disappears and is gone forever. When I am holding a small item and cleaning it with wire brush or using the polish wheel, they suddenly fly away and are never seen again. I never lose a tool, but most are missing in action. Anyone else have problems such as these? Randy

Hey JS, What do you make of the difference in mounting bolts? Seems that two bolts that hold the front of the motor, should not be smaller. Anyway if you see my castle nut out your way, turn it around and send it east. Thanks

Honestly I have no idea what size they should be, everything I have has been rebuilt and changed several times so it is had to tell what was original! The originals were a type of shoulder bolt.

Just went and measured a repo I have. From the inside of the head to the edge of the shoulder is 1.85 X .625, the threaded part is 1.1 X .436 shank with 7/16 - 20 threads. The head is 1 1/8 across the flats.

I just compared a new Drake mount bolt and an old original bolt. The main shank is 5/8" and the threaded shank is 7/16" -20. The head is identical.
