Water pump rebuild questions

I have owned my Model A about 3 months and the learning curve is steep !!

My water pump was leaking and had a lot of end play so I ordered a rebuild kit from Mac's....the kit went to gether as advertised but I have a couple of doubts (questions)....

1) the threaded brass bushing that the packing nut screws on to went in easily and can be rotated in the housing with a bit of effort....is there supposed to be a pin or set screw to hold it in place ?

2) the brass bushing and packing nut will slide fore and aft about 1/8 inch, as allowed by the exposed threads, before the face of the packing nut hits the housing or the shoulder of the bushing bottoms out. Same question as above....is the bushing supposed to be anchored in place ?

Thanks, I appreciate the support....

That brass bushing should be a tight fit in the housing sounds like either poor quality parts or a worn housing to me . Try some locktite on it . Have you eliminated the end play in the water pump shaft ? Thats important as well . You can buy a collar to fit on the shaft or weld or braze up the end , I hope you bought a stanless shaft the mild steel ones can wear out quick .

I agree the bushing should fit tight and not turn. The collar will work and is available from most parts vendors.

Check your water pump housing for cracks or wear in the bore. End play is best controlled by using the thrust washers that go on each side of the impeller. If it is questionable in any way figure it out as water pump failure can ruin the radiator. I have had the best luck with the "leakless" bushings with the seal on the water side. When greasing the bushing, back the packing nut off so the grease goes out the front and not into the water.
