Water pump Question

I rebuilt my waterpump on my 1931 Tudoor with a leakless kit. I also installed a thermostat that it did not have before. Now it pumps coolant out the radiator overflow when I first start it, but tends to stop after it warms up. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Jerry

You may be trying to keep it too full. Only fill to just so you can see the coolant in the bottom of the top tank when cold and it should stay at that level for some time when the engine is cold.

I would refrain from modifying the impellers rigt now

There are several other things I'd look at first

1. The overflow tube should extend till the lower end of the radiator neck. If not put an extension tube on it
2. There should be a full baffle in the upper tank extending probably 4 inches or so from center left and right to each side of the upper tank
Many poor repro radiators do not have good baffles try the level as noted below if the baffle is deficient it may eventually be need to be fixed. A really good radiator shop can make one for it

3. Radiators sort of seek their own level. I recommend filling until you can just see the coolant level. That will allow for proper room for expansion and flow

Use an infrared unit to make sure you are getting good even temps left to right on the core. Of course it should be cooler down below than up top

Can you expound on that? I cannot picture what you are saying. Are you referring to the tube where it enters the filler neck, saying it should extend below the neck, into the top tank space?

Quinn,He means the overflow tube that sticks up into the cap neck,if you put a little piece of hose on it to extend it up as high as you can, less water will splash into it to run out the bottom. That windshield glass I have measures 42-1/2,X 13-1/2 on the ends, and 11-1/2 in the middle. It came out of a repro standard open car frame.I'ts a little shy in the center to fit the original closed car frames. If you can use it trade me some trinket,I only put the price on it through craigslist to weed out the lowbawlers.

Thanks Keith, on both counts. I did not think it made sense to put the tube down, just could not get a mental picture in the grey matter. I will measure the windshield frame I have when I get home.
