water pump problem

Spent 10 days in hospital now fifth day home. Decided to start A. Started right up. In 30 seconds light smoke and burnt smell. Shut down. Had wife hit starter while I watched. Starter turns not water pump. Water pump pulley shows sign of burned paint with residue on starter. What happened? All of a sudden. Must be frozen - new to me. Had leaks before in another A but not this condition. Any ideas?? Need few more days before opening tool box. Thanks

Sounds like the waterpump seezed up. Can be rebuilt if it is configured as an original, If it is a leakless, then probably will need to be replaced.

As an afterthought, one maintenance procedure is to regularly lube the outer bearing (on the fan side) and carefully lube the packing side bushing. What is your practice?

Mine also set up once over the winter. I just grabbed the fan and moved it enough to not be stuck, then lubed it up again.

Got some energy today and had help loosening generator to get belt off. Had to pull bolt out of generator to slip belt off. Belt stuck around water pump pulley and had to be forced off. Lubed water pump and it turns not easy but not hard. Generator pulley turns ok. I assume since belt is old it stuck to water pump pulley. Will get ride to A shop for new belt. Make sense? Will advise tomorrow.

Something I do each time I check the oil. . . . I put the drop of oil on the dipstick on the waterpump shaft by the packing nut. I dip again and do the forward part of the shaft. Never had any problems. . . .

Thanks for showing me that tip, Dick. I do the same everytime I check the oil now.
