Water pump noise

When I took my 29 Town Sedan out today, I noticed that the water pump was making a "whoosh,whoosh,whoosh,..." noise at idle that accelerated when I put on the gas. The water pump is new and haven't had any issues with it. I checked the fan and it is tight on the shaft; however, I was able to turn it with the belt on. I am running an alternator, so that seemed a bit odd. When I got the car back from the rebuilder, I was under the impression that the belt was supposed to be very tight.

I have not checked the packing nut yet. Could it be loose and making that type of noise?

The pump has been thoroughly greased, so that should (in theory) not be the issue.

The belt is not squeaking per se.

Your thoughts and advice are very appreciated.

Thank you.

If belt is to tight, not good for water pump should be able to push belt in about an inch or so.Doesn't need to be real tight!!!
