Fired up the flathead in my avitar today. I used the waterpumps that came with it with new rebuild kits from Mac's. I never rebuilt waterpumps before but it didn't seem like rocket science but.... of course they both seep from behind the pully. What did I miss or is anything I can do to stop it?
Before anyone suggest I just put on a set of new "modern" style pumps, I have a set sitting here. I wanted to use the chrome pullys and of course they don't fit the new pumps.

Did you refinish the seal seats in the pumps? Here is a link to a web page article I wrote about installing kits in 37 - 48 water pumps: http://mysite.ncnetwork.net/wgmumaw/Water Pump Rebuild/Rebuild 37-48 water pumps.htm

Helpfull artical, thanks. Yes, I did dress the seal seats a little with a scotch brite roloc on a air grinder. They wern't pitted so it was more to clean them up.
I did notice from the artical I don't have thrush washers between the pump & the pullys, didn't have them when I took it apart and being the first time I ever had pumps apart didn't know they were suppose to be there. It leaves me more then a 1/16 freeplay so I guess I better find some and put them in.

Hey Bill, that is a great site you set up on water pump rebuilding. Did the double pulley pictured, 8509, only come on '37 to '41 trucks? I need to find a set of those.

Let it run awhile today and one pump quit leaking and the other has slowed down to a very occasional drip so maybe if I'm lucky the seals are just taking a bit to seat like Richard says. I'll watch them awile and see what happens.
