Water pump/fan taper issue

Has anyone had an issue with the aluminum two blade fan not seating? This fan is bottoming on the lock collar that is on the water pump. The pump was rebuilt with aftermarket SS shaft and leakless components. The front bearing is an original style. I don't know who's kit or fan it is, was already on the car. Without the collar the fan will seat on the taper. Seems to have a lot of end play with out the collar. Thanks guys!

How old is the fan? The manufacturer had an issue two or three years ago where they were machined correctly and they exchanged them for correctly machined ones. If you are certain it is the fan hub that is the issue, contact Tom or Don at Snyders and discuss your issue.

I found out sometime in the 80's that I couldn't use the lock collar behind the hub of the aluminum fan. It's not an original part anyway. They weren't used when built new. Then,a couple of years ago I found that I could on a customers car.Fans made different now? Collars made different? I have the collars on all of mine, but I put them on the shaft, ahead of the packing nut. When I adjust the packing nut I can just loosen the collar and slide that back too. Most people aren't going to know there is an extra part in there. It's sure not any funnier looking than an alternator.

The fan appears to be brand new. Hey Keith, pretty good idea! It also looks like the fan pulley alignment is off. Pulley almost looks too far back.

I used some lay out dye on the shaft to check the fit of the fan taper. also I had to sand the the thickness of the collar so it didn't interfer with the fan when you tighten it. make sure the fan goes all the way on. there is alot of measuring. and some fitting to do. damn repo crap, but it can be made to work.

On Vince's site are pictures of several replacement shafts, all with different tapers. When we did my head gasket a month or so ago we tried installing alum fan, it would not fit the shaft (leakless pump/shaft from the late 80's, so the orig fan (after CLOSE inspection) went back on. The fan did fit fine on an orig pump we had. FWIW

Well, I have ordered the front bearing, washers and felts to replace what was in the front of my pump. That bearing got damaged when the fan was tightened up with the lock collar installed. I'm going to check and see if I actually need the collar. If I need it, I'm going to put it on in front of the pack nut as Keith said above. Decided to fix this pump and keep the bearings serviceable. And this pump didn't leak either. Once together, I'll check actual belt alignment. Thanks for all the comments! It appears the fan needs to tighten up another 1/8", which the lock collar prevented. Sometimes the answers are obvious! LOL

The impellor may have been pressed onto the shaft TOO FAR FORWARD, thus making the front end of the shaft too short. The worn part in the head could still allow the pump to fit the head.

Well, I replace the water pump front bearing and installed the lock collar in front of the packing nut. Needed the collar or a longer shaft, the shaft was already new. Ran the car, everything is beautiful! Now I just need to straighten out the fuel tank sediment.

I am not a fan of the 29 style cowl lamps on a 28-29 coupe-pillored car such as the couped, tudor and roadster etc.The 30-31 style cowl lamps & arms are much better looking IMO.
