Water pump end play

The water pump on my car has about 1/4 inch end plat to the front of the car! It goes far enough to make the pulleys out of line. Where is the wear and how do I fix this? Thank you for any advice.
 
the wear is usually in the head, where the stop is part of the casting. A simple fix is to get a collar from one of the A suppliers that fits over the pump shaft behind the fan, and limits the travel. You can also braze the end of the shaft to bring it back far enough to contact the stop in the head. Many of today's leakless pumps come with a built in limit using the front bearing and C clips.
 
Also make sure you have a good square brass thrust plate for the impellor to push against. With a 1/4" of play the brass plate is almost surely out of place.
