Water Pump and Fan

Hey folks,
I had already ordered my 2-Blade fan. Today I ordered the leakless water pump and the mounting kit. Question to the folks here, I can put the Fan and Water Pump together and then mount the pump to the block w/o having to do too much tear apart with the radiator. Just pull it forward some?

Thanks!

Dave

Yes. Drain the coolant and disconnect the rods and radiator hose at the top. Pull the radiator forward. Use the bolts that look like studs and nuts. Tape a piece of cardboard to the rear of the radiator. Some people have reported that they were able to put the fan and pump on without moving the radiator forward, but even if it is possible, it is easier if you do move the radiator.

If you put a very light smear of grease on the inside of the radiator hose, it will make it easier to re install and remove next time. Too much grease will clog up the radiator. Best to use rubber compatible grease if you have it.

Thanks NK. will add this to my 'list' for things to do this year, besides the clutch, pressure plate, Throw-Out, and pull torque tube and etc............. Oh the fun....."It's a hobby"

do you have a two-blade fan or four blade. the two you can do as NK say a four blade is not so easy.

The other day I installed my new aluminum fan onto the pump which was mounted to the engine without moving the radiator.

Liquid dish soap on the inside of the radiator hose is excellent to use and obviously will dissolve in the water and won't clog anything and it's dirt cheap cause everybody has some!!!

Uh, liquid dish soap is also formulated to create lasting suds. Does not sound like anything I’d like to introduce into my cooling system.

I have a bottle of Armour All that I got years ago. Works great for putting on rubber things I want a bit slippery, like the insides of radiator hoses, grommets to make them easier to install, rubber window gaskets that slide in metal channels, etc.

IIRC, the new fan comes with a key and a nut? Or am I imagining things again? 🫤

The mounting kit is an ambiguous term. It could be either the key, washer and nut to mount the fan to the shaft or the 4 bolts to mount the pump to the block. The former is a separately available item and is not included with the fan.
As for mounting the pump with 2 blade fan already attached, I do it with the radiator still in its place. A piece of cardboard behind the radiator protects it from any damage. Mount the fan from the side with the blades vertical.

mmm Synchro, does that mean on this side of the world we should mount the blades horizontally?:)

Certainly! I just did it a month ago. I replaced my stock head with a Snyder's 6.1:1 version (viva la difference), mounted the fan to a new 'leakless' water pump and mounted the entire assembly to the new head. I suggest spraying the inside of the fan sleeve with a bit of silicon so that it goes on with minimal hammering. Without even loosening the radiator I was able to simply drop the head/pump/fan assembly into place after allowing the gaskets and silicon sealer to cure overnight. Plenty of clearance between the fan and the radiator (roughly 1.25 inches)! The water pump assembly/fan make for an easy hand-hold to leverage the head into place without banging into anything. I also suggest a light spray of silicon to the inside of the water hose to make it easier to slip on.

Jay jay, I ordered my fan and pump from Snyder's and it came with the usual 'key" as well as the castle nut with cotter pin hole. Mine has been mounted for a month and is running fine and no vibration.

I also suggest a light spray of silicon to the inside of the water hose to make it easier to slip on.

If you put silicone inside the hose (female), it will be pushed inwards as the hose is pushed over the inlet/outlet (male). That silicone will end up in the top tank of your radiator, thus blocking it. If you must use silicone, apply it to the male component ONLY. The same goes for grease or any other goo to help fit the hose.
