washers on manifold

Should the washers on the manifold studs be placed with the concave side pointing towards block or vice versa?

The Model A Judging Standards has an assembly illustration showing as James said, concave side towards block. If you don't already own this book you should acquire one along with the Model A service bulletins.

Does it really make that much differance which side of it goes up or down, whats this hobby comming to??? ken ct.

For these washers, it absolutely makes a difference which way they are installed. If they are installed incorrectly, you stand a very good chance of breaking the ears off the manifolds.

yes this is true. They will break if put on wrong. The presure is spread out evenly when put on correctly. If put on backwards the preasure is put on the edges of the ears.

To expand a bit on what tuneman states...by placing the convex side against the nut, it allows the washer to "equalize" the pressure against both the intake and the exhaust by "seeking" its own position. Placed correctly the washer evens out minor differences in thickness between the two flanges. If placed concave side against the nut, the washer can not pivot and will exert unequal pressure on the edges of the manifold, possibly causing damage.
