Any way to ID the engine from outside, this is still in the ww2 crate.
Can I tell if its 221 or 239 , thin sleaves or not ,
would it have the 2.4 or 2.5 mains
Thanks Lawrie
Not sure how to ID.
However, I am 100% certain you will have to disassemble this. It'll need to be at minimum honed, the crank polished and most likely new bearings.
I have had numerous NOS engines in the crates. Each and every one required honing. Some required boring. All required polishing the crank. A few required grinding the crank.
Sadly, you won't know what's required until it's disassembled.
Lawrie if the engine is a US surplus item from WW-2 since the war years were 1941 to 1945 the mains would be 2.5. The 2.4 size would be the size of earlier 21 stud engines so far I in have never seen a 2.4 size the a 24 stud engine.

Lawrie, Quick way to tell the mains dia is by the crank snout...all the 2.5 mains have the long snout, all the 2.4 cranks have the shorter, smaller dia snout.
Ronnie, the first 24 stud engines introduced in 1938 ran the earlier, smaller main dia cranks. 39 Deluxes, on account of the crank mounted fans, saw the introduction of the longer snout which then became the norm for all subsequent engines.
