waking a sleepy ford galaxie

Hi I'm a new ford owner. I was given a old 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 all I know about the car is that it ran 9 years ago when it was parked in a garage My brother-in-law bought the car for 2,000. it is all painted in primer looks like someone started to fix it up but my brother-in-law did nothing with it now I would like to start it up and get it running to start restoreing it but I know nothing about fords or mecanical operations of a ford I know only basic maintenance of a car what do I do to wake a car that has been hibernating for 9 years I don't want to damage the motor or anything. I'm on a fixed income so it will take me forever to fix this car up so I don't have money lying around to play with I was gonna replace all the coolant and oil in the car to start out with. I watched a you tube video of 2 guys starting a ford galaxie they said something about coating the cylinders with sea foam or c-foam????? what is this foam and how do you coat them I want to do this right. thanks for any help I can get

Seafoam is in several forms but using regular motor oil works just fine. Pull out the spark plugs and shoot some oil into the cylinders. Then slowly turn the engine or turn it on the starter if it works.

The # 1 product used for years is Marvel Mystery Oil divide the contents of 1 QT into each cylinder, add about 1/2 a QT to the oil.Now the bad news! you really should drop the gas tank and take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out after sitting 9 years it is probably loaded with varnish and flaking from the crud in unleaded gas this also accumulates in the metal fuel lines. After you run the car with the Marvel in it about 100 miles then change the oil and filter. You may want to run 15W40 Delvac the first change, this oil has a higher detergent and also a higher amount of ZDDP for your flat tappet camshaft.

thank you for your replies I won't be doing anything till spring but I am really excited to try these ideas out thank you again

good news the Engine is not seized. it moved freely but we hit a snag when we started to add new fluids the coolant ran right out one of the freeze plugs is rusted out so I have to replace those. the questions I have now are 1# what kind of fuel filter does a 1966 Ford have on it I thought they were either a in line filter or the kind that screws into the carb. this car looks like it has a screw on oil filter type cf-164 I looked that number up on ac delco site it says its a fuel filter for a 80's truck ???? there is a oil filter right next to it so I now it isn't a oil filter too. besides it has gas lines running to it. also I can't start the car from the ignition inside what should I look at first or try first my brother had the car turning over from a remote switch under the hood so we now the car turns over just not from the inside ignition any help is always greatly appriciated.

Many Ford cars and trucks of that era had a spin on fuel filter on the bottom of the fuel pump. It is not uncommon for the outer housing to destroy itself on removal. They are available.

Hi it is a column shifter. Did the 1966 ford galaxie have a neutral safty switch or is that just on locking steering columns I had that problem with my oldsmobile my very first car was a 1973 olds cutlas I had to replace a neutral safty switch when this problem happened. autozone doesn't list such a switch for the galaxie. Fords are new to me I was raised on GM vehicles (Oldsmobiles and Buicks) I'm excited about restoreing this car it was a dream of my Dads and mine unfortunitly my father passed before we could live out that dream.

Yes, the 66 has a nuetral safety switch, but can't remember where it is - under dash, under hood or at the trans.

Hi JKeesey Why did you ask if the galaxie was a floor or column shift is there something I need to look for. the galaxie is a column shift My brother went out and tried starting the galaxie in all the gears with no such luck he did find a switch on the underside of the steering column but wasn't able to take pictures for me the car is sitting at my mothers place I live about a half hour from her so he tinkers with it and relys the info to me. we have covered the car for the winter we will start work on it again in the spring. I'm trying to find out as much about the car and how to repair it over the winter so we can hit it hard in the spring thank you and all those who help me learn about the ford Galaxie.
