VIN number

Contemplating purchasing a 31 A that has no title. To get a title from the state (IL) I believe I need the VIN off of the car. Can someone where to find this on an A? Is it on the firewall?
I'm going to look at the car tomorrow so I haven't had a chance to look for myself yet.

The Model A is usually registered by the engine number (stamped into a pad on driver's side of the block). This number was also stamped into the top of the left frame on the assembly line but this location is not visible with out removing the body. Some states will require you to lift the body. Another possibility is that some states install a tag on the door jam if it has been registered recently.

Go to my web site to Model A trivia scroll down will see where they are. Driver side of motor center below the head a flat spot with the number and on the frame under the body drivers side,Have to lift the body to see but most use the engine number for titles. No VIN numbers.

I live in Naperville and would be happy to help, may even be able to assist you in looking at the car. It is tough to get a Model A titled in IL since the DMV has been requiring that the body is removed to see the VIN stamped on the frame. Give me a call at 630-347-5405 if you think I may be able to help.

In most states the lack of paperwork has an impact on the value. I would probably not buy a car without paperwork. Is there a reason the paperwork is missing? Maybe the car was stolen or really belongs to someone else. If it was just lost then the registered owner can easily apply for a replacement.

Could be Grandpa died and no one can find a title or registration for it.

Piece of cake. Have the executer of the estate contact the DMV and request a duplicate title (assuming he had put it in his name). If it wasn't in grandpa's name be sure the bill of sale comes from the executer of the estate. I know you just gave an example but if we get the real story there may be a simple solution (and then maybe not).
